Upon opening the application, you get a separate window to set preferences.

When you quit the software, your device goes back to the default minimum fan settings of your Mac OS. You can use the dashboard to monitor and control your system’s fans. On clicking this icon, you can access more information, switch between different presets, change settings, and do much more.
Once downloaded, you can find the application in the menu bar displaying the current temperature of the CPU, GPU, and HDD. SmcFanControl is quite lightweight and runs on all machines with a Mac operating system of 10.7 and above.
You can use the settings to individually maintain the minimum speed of the left and the right fans. One setting is for when your computer is charging, another is for battery usage, and the last for when it is connected to an AC power source.

This functionality allows you to gain full control of your device’s fans without worrying about system failure. smcFanControl takes care of this problem by setting a limit below which users can’t go. It’s reluctant, mostly because this could lead to CPU failure if someone reduces the speed limit below the required minimum.

However, Apple doesn’t provide any software that lets you take manual control. To bring down the overall temperature, the device lowers the clock frequency and spins the fans so the processor gets a chance to cool down. It can even happen when your device is trying to complete old processes or running apps in the background. Here you must enter the path to the pwm device which will control the fan. Above this temperature the fan will set to the highest value which is set in point 9. Under this temperature the fan will be set to the lowest value which is set in point 7.Įnter the maximum temperature (grather than xy☌): This is the lowest temperature to control the fan. If your device displays a value other than Standby while the device is in Standby mode, you can set a custom value here. If you list them you will fall back to point 2.Įnter the value when the hard disk is in standby mode, or press EXC to continue with default value (standby): Here you are also able to list the possible HDDs. The format must be the same as the Control HDD. If this HDD goes to sleep, the control HDD will do this as well.Įnter the HDD to handle standby (/dev/sdx) or press l to list: If you want to be able to use the standby function of your drive you must type in a reference HDD.
